How important is backup? Modern computers are very reliable. This may be why the majority of people who work with computers (home or office) don't think much about backing up their systems. We just expect them to work. We all take for granted the availability of our files and documents. Many users would not think the fixed disk drive that holds all their files would become corrupted or fail altogether, but it happens. A system might work for six months or five years; however, it will fail! When it fails, will you be protected? Can you recreate your files from source documents? How long will it take to reenter your information? How much will it cost? How long will you be down? If you panic when answering these questions, you need to become proactive. In some cases a great amount of planning must occur to ensure maximum uptime and make your entire backup system efficient and reliable. The first step is to assess your business requirements and determine the importance of your data and customized applications. Plan a strategy for how, when, and what to backup? How much data will you backup? What is the best time to backup data? How often will you rotate media? Where will you store them?
